A New Law Requires a Kill Switch; It's Smart to Wear Them Regardless

As we gear up for the upcoming boating season, it's crucial for all
boaters to be informed about a significant new federal law that took
effect in April 2021.

This law mandates using engine cut-off switches (ECOS), commonly
called kill switches, on motor boats. The law is applicable across all
states and aims to enhance boating safety.

“So a lot of us have taken for granted over the years that our boats
have had them, and sometimes we use them when we're running, and the
water's rough,” said Stokley’s Marine Owner Ralph Stokley. “But
now the law says you must always have it on when you're operating your
engine.”

The primary goal of this legislation is to prevent accidents by
ensuring that the boat's engine is immediately shut off if
the operator is unintentionally ejected, thereby avoiding the risk of
runaway boats that could potentially harm passengers in the water. As
a dedicated local marine dealer, we prioritize your safety and
compliance with this new regulation.

Most modern boats are already equipped with kill switches, which are
typically connected to the driver's life jacket. If your boat lacks
this safety feature, we are here to assist you in choosing and
installing the appropriate kill switch system. It's essential to
develop the habit of attaching the kill switch to your life jacket or
wrist every time you start the engine, ensuring that the motor ceases
operation instantly should you fall overboard.

Law enforcement has commenced active enforcement of this rule, and
non-compliance may result in fines. Our goal is to help you enjoy a
safe boating experience without worrying about penalties. Please
contact us for any support needed in installing, connecting, or using
your kill switch effectively.

We hope this update helps you prepare for a safe and lawful boating
season. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to contact us.
We're excited to see you making waves soon!
